Pro-lifers grow accustomed to all sorts of insults, the most unimaginative being ‘Fascist’ or ‘Nazi.’ But this pro-abortion writer takes the prize for being the biggest tyrant of all when he applauds abortion for wiping out the ‘undesirables’.

His fairly bizarre article appeared in Quadrant this week, singing the praises of abortion, but also – surprisingly – of eugenics. The author, William D Rubenstein, apparently lives in Australia but used American statistics to prove his point that killing babies is good for society. Especially when those babies belong to underprivileged mothers.

Rubenstein’s article makes three points: that abortion has long-term demographic consequences (true), that abortion has eugenic consequences (also true) and that eugenics is good for society (Patently false!).

To his credit, the author is not a rabid proponent of killing children, like those vocal members of the Shout Your Abortion movement. He doesn’t particularly like abortion and is against late-term abortion altogether. But his cool, rational appraisal of the positive outcomes of slaughtering tiny members of society leaves one with an uneasy feeling – you may have felt it in the movie when the thugs move out and the torturer arrives with his scalpel set.

Rubenstein argues, rightly, that of all possible influences, abortion has made the greatest impact on the population of the US, because of its generational effect. For every child aborted, there are children and grandchildren missing as well. His estimate is that there could be as many as 100 million people missing from the American population due to their having been killed in the womb.

The article is valuable for its mind-blowing statistics alone:

  • in 2017, 20 per cent of pregnancies in the US ended in abortion.
  • 30-33 per cent of abortions are performed on African American women, BUT
  • African Americans make up only 13 per cent of the population
  • The total black population in the US is around 40 million, BUT
  • could be around 70 million, had 13 million black babies (along with their potential offspring) not been aborted.
  • In New York City, more black babies are aborted than the total of babies born to all women.
  • In the state of Georgia, African American women comprise roughly one-sixth of the population, BUT
  • two-thirds of Georgia’s abortions are performed on that group.
  • 86 per cent of aborting mothers are single
  • 24 per cent are Catholic

Rubenstein goes on to outline the history of the eugenics movement, which culminated in its disgraceful climax during the Nazi regime in Germany. Then he draws the startling conclusion that a contemporary eugenic programme is being successfully carried out on willing participants: the numerous black and underprivileged mothers who voluntarily take their children to be aborted. [This is not to suggest that coercion by partners, families etc is never a factor in abortion, but rather than women in western countries are not forced by their governments to abort. Of course, China is another matter, since abortion is often forced by government officials; in the case of the minority Uighurs, forced abortion is definitely eugenic.]

This is where the author’s thoughts take a decidedly horrific twist: he claims that abortion has been good for America since the rate of violent crime has decreased due to the elimination of pre-born potential criminals. Adolf Hitler and Margaret Sanger would be proud.

Yet nonetheless the result of this policy has been to produce far-reaching eugenicist outcomes, in many respects similar to what the advocates of this movement would have demanded 120 years ago, which they often wished to be carried out by mandatory state direction. It has been precisely the poor, the unmarried, the non-white, and those from dysfunctional, low-life families and backgrounds who have voluntarily secured abortions in record numbers in the United States.

Rubenstein even cites a study to prove his point. (And how does the term ‘low-life’ rate a mention in a serious publication like Quadrant? It’s obvious how little dignity the author affords those people whom he considers are better off dead!)

While acknowledging that improved policing and economy and extended prison sentences may also contribute, the author gladly credits abortion with this reduction in crime and claims that entire neighbourhoods have become safer. He looks at current rates of crime and notes that although they are disproportionately committed by African Americans, the numbers would have been ‘far worse but for Roe vs Wade’! Increased IQ, fewer psychopaths, more Republicans – these are some of the achievements Rubenstein claims to have been won by abortion. How ironic that the man who is said to be the most pro-life president might have been elected only because of Roe v Wade.

The article ends quite abruptly with what might be a tinge of sorrow as the author reminds us that Australia has not the huge number of violent crimes, gangs and serial killers as the US and so the impact of abortion here is less easy to chart.

All in all, a very shallow reading of the effects that abortion is having on our culture. There is no mention of the huge social cost – interrupted lives, and arrested development, the huge economic cost – of women’s, men’s and doctors’ mental and physical health, or of the emotional cost of ruptured relationships and family breakdowns due to abortion. This is bad enough without facing the spiritual impact that the mass killing of our offspring has on our nation.

Abortion is a sin that cries to heaven!

Somehow killing millions of little children is meant to be tolerated because it rids us of a few troublesome adults?

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bloodbath water. And while I accept that it isn’t the best justification of the pro-life position to cite all the talented and helpful people that could have been born, had they not been aborted – because EVERY life is precious, not only the talented, useful and virtuous – there is no doubt that among those millions of tiny lives cast asunder, there would have been brilliant inventors, scientists, healers and logisticians who could have amply repaid society for the debt left by those few criminal offenders.

William Rubenstein, there’s no need to further investigate the beneficial effects of abortion on Australian society: there are none. It’s time to play the Nazi card and call you out for your hateful bigotry.
