New statistics reveal the vast majority of assaults at public swimming pools in the UK take place in unisex change rooms. According to data obtained by The Sunday Times, almost 90% of reported sexual assaults, harassment and voyeurism in swimming pool and sports-centre change rooms happened in unisex facilities. Of the 134 incidents reported in the UK last year, 120 of those were carried out in gender-neutral change rooms, while just 14 took place in single-sex changing areas. Peta Credlin has called The Crimes Legislation Amendment (Sexual Crimes against Children and Community Protection Measures) Bill 2017, “the most significant reform to the legal framework concerning child sex offenders in decades.” The Bill would introduce mandatory minimum penalties for child sex offenders and repeat offenders, extend their jail time, and make it less likely pedophiles would be granted parole. The Telethon Kids Institute recently released a study which found transgender youth are at an alarmingly high risk of suicide and serious depression. The Trans Pathways survey, which examined the mental health of young transgenders revealed the following: Almost 80% of trans people aged 14-25 years had self-harmed, compared to almost 11% in the general population. 48% attempted suicide, compared to 2.4% of the general population. Trans youth suffer symptoms of depression almost 10 times the rate of the Australian average for young people. They have anxiety disorders 10-13 times the rate of the average Australian young person.
